| A letter from a reader- Greetings from Dearborn, Michigan Max, Your session with the Bonanza brought back some eloquent memories of my experience with a 1948 V-35. Dave Michaels was a former Naval Aviator with over 4000 hours is several types. His V-35 (N4326Y) was housed at Detroit's Metro Airport, and was for me an escape from a rather sad time of my life. We worked at Ford as systems engineers. It was powered by a 6-cylinder Continental, and used a three-bladed Hartzell prop. With all Dave had added to the instruments and engine monitoring equipment, he always had a concise, and full account of all related activities to flight. Zipping through the clouds was an awesome experience Max, and Dave was one who really kept himself up-to-date on safe flying techniques. Short field approaches were especially interesting, as Dave knew his aircraft well enough to bring it to a complete stop in about 100 meters of initial T/D. One rather interesting evening trip was from Detroit's Metro Airport to the Palwaukee airport. There he taxied the plane up to the 94th Aero Squadron Restaurant, and we had a wonderful time and dinner. The ride back over Chicago, at night was breath-taking as you might well imagine. Sadly, Dave left Ford around 1981, and we've lost touch with one another. He will always remain one of my favorite people because of the kind nature he expressed towards me. Thank you very much for the marvelous essay on a "straight 35". It sure brought back some great memories and really made my day! All the best to you and yours, Mel Dearborn, Michigan | | |
