The U.S. Government had plans in the works to destroy left-over planes before WWII had even ended. One reason, to ensure that aircraft makers like Boeing, Lockeed, McDonald-Douglas and Grumman wouldn't go out of business with all the surplus planes flooding the market. Still, one wishes they weren't quite so efficient in the effort.
